You’ll hear asphalt and composition shingles referred to as “3 Tab Shingle”, because they come in a strip with notches that create what appears to be three separate shingles.
Premium Composition/Asphalt Shingle products are called “architectural” or “dimensional” shingles. These thicker, often laminated shingles cast shadow lines like a thick wood shake. As you can see in the picture above, the result is a rich, textured appearance rather than the traditional flat surface of standard three-tab shingles.
All asphalt shingles are coated with a layer of mineral granules that protect the shingle from sunlight, add color and, in some cases, help resist algae and fungus growth. Manufacturers can discourage unwanted plant life by adding copper or zinc to the granule mix.

Impact Resistant Roofing Shingles and Material is a relatively new option for residential and commercial building applications. EA Pro Roofing believes Impact Resistant roofing shingles can be a great option for many homeowners. Texas receives more than its fair share of damaging hail so this option is one worth consideration.
Between 1991 and 1995, wind and hail caused an average of $8 billion in insurance payouts each year. Wind and hail damage to roofs comprises a significant portion of this cost. Hail damage to asphalt shingles may include severe granule loss, material loss at shingle edges, and penetration.
New Impact Resistant shingle products are designed to resist damage from impact and high winds. They meet the most stringent standards for impact resistance (Class 4) set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and wind resistance set by UL and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).
Several manufacturers offer asphalt shingles designed to resist the effects of severe weather such as wind and impact from flying debris or hail. Different proprietary methods are used to keep granules attached to the shingle, to prevent shingle breaking during impact, and to keep shingles attached to the sheathing during high winds.
UL 2218 classifies the resistance of roofing products to impact damage. In the test, steel balls are directed at roof samples, and damage is observed. Products that receive a Class 4 rating from UL 2218 are the most resistive to hail damage. Some major insurance companies are offering homeowner premium discounts for the use of roofing products that receive a Class 4 rating. Consult with your LEA Pro Roofing expert for details on these discounts.

METAL ROOFING is quickly becoming a desirable alternative to traditional composition shingles. Along with its many advantages over conventional roofing, Dallas Metal Roofing is now available in several styles and designer colors, allowing you to add beauty and value to your home.
Fort Worth metal roofing is much stronger and more durable than asphalt shingle roofing. Many manufacturer’s offer 30 year limited paint warranty on their panels, your metal roof can last twice as long as most conventional roofs. Because metal roofing is so durable, it has long been the choice for many school, government, and industrial buildings.
Metal roofing is superior to composition roofing in all types of weather conditions, including hail, sun exposure, and wind. Unlike shingles, metal roofing will not deteriorate due to sun exposure. High winds and/or a hail storm will destroy a composition roof, but a metal roof can handle wind speeds up to 140 MPH and is extremely hail resistant. Metal roofing performs so well, that in the state of Texas, if you have a metal roof that meets Underwriters Laboratories UL 2218 specifications, you can qualify for up to a 35% discount on your homeowner’s insurance.
Lighter colored metal roofs reflect away much of the sun’s UV rays, which can help keep your house cooler and lower cooling costs. In recent studies done in Florida, a metal roof can cut cooling costs by as much as 25% or more.
According to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center, 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into U.S. landfills annually. The recycled content of steel in metal roofing is much higher than the recycled content in asphalt shingles. Also, due to the low weight of metal roofing (about half that of shingles), in many cases it can be installed directly over your existing roof, saving the environmental as well as financial costs associated with removal and disposal.
